Is the OP a virgin?

Point is....if he is sexually active and having fever blisters on a frequent basis he should be getting tested. It could be type 1....or it could be type 2 or he could have both.

Like another poster said....you can have herpes outbreaks anywhere.

Either way....both are still herpes. One is just a more "socially acceptable" form of it.

lol I heard that most people have it if your parents develop fever blisters because it gets passed to the child through the womb.

What....what do you think HSV-1 stand for? The same virus that causes cold sores.

Herpes simplex virus

The two types differentiate the point of origin. Both are not curable. Once you get cold sores...you will always have HSV-1 in your system and be prone to cold sores again.

- Famciclovir (better than valtrex)
- Lysine (1000-2000mg daily)
- Abreva
- 90% Isopropyl Alcohol
- Stay away from or reduce intake of: Chocolate, Peanuts as well anything with Niacin in it
- Reduce your caffeine intake, up your water intake.
- Consistent sleep cycle (# hours)

ETA:

Carmex. It won't get rid of your fever blisters, but it will make them shiny and more noticeable.

It will also spread them to everywhere you applied the carmex. This is true with any Chapstick or if you merely touch the blister and then touch somewhere else.

ETA2:

The anti-viril properties of L-Lyseine (supplements) also help to treat the painful blisters that come with shingles (herpes zoster).

True. If you've had Chicken pox, you have the herpes zoster virus inside if you which means everyone has a variation from the herpes viral family whether they like it or not. EVERYONE DO THE HERP DERP!

Cause I always post in the STD (or related) threads.

People hear the word "herpes" and "hpv" and assume it means a person is sexually dirty. When really.....they are wayyyy more common than people realize. I'm a huge advocate for frequent std testing if you are sexually active with more than one partner. That way you are aware of what you have and could possibly be spreading to others.

Even so...herpes, while uncurable, isn't a death sentence. Many people that have the dreaded "bad" kind don't even have that many outbreaks. The only way it can be seriously dangerous is if you are pregnant and deliver vaginally with an active outbreak....then it can cause serious issues in the baby(blindness among other things).

Expensive but the best over the counter relief you can buy that actually works.

It is often transferred from family members.. granny giving baby a kiss. If you come from a large Italian family like I do, everybody kisses everybody from birth.

HSV-1 (aka Cold sores/Fever Blisters) can be (and often is) hereditary. You can have an active or inactive virus.

HSV-1 causes cold sores

HSV-2 causes genital herpes

They are completely separate, yet related, viruses.

Having one does not make you ANY more likely to have the other, and annecdotally, having HSV-1 outbreaks while never having had an HSV-2 outbreak is a reasonable (I'll admit not foolproof) indication you don't have HSV-2. An outbreak of either is usually triggered by a weakened immune system, such as another illness like cold or flu. Put another way, the odds are very low that someone could carry asymtomatic HSV-2 but have multiple HSV-1 outbreaks.

I think you may be confusing your viruses. If someone's immune system is so vulnerable that they are having cold sores very frequently, a doctor would probably order an HIV test.

I stand corrected

Fin....knowing what I know about it, I wouldn't necessarily totally dismiss someone because they did.

I mean....are they taking valtrex daily?

When I worked at woman's in mother/baby I knew the std status of all the moms I cared for.

You wouldn't believe how many had genital herpes.
