One of our Vikings holds the record for the longest non stop carrier flight, the one that toted Fawaz Younis from eastern med to dover. that record will likely never be broken.

I went TDY there for a month. That was a pretty neat area.

Vertical descent looked a little too hard. Maybe he added power to try to correct the V/S being too fast but the engine didn't have enough time to spool up the correct thrust before impacting the ground. Once on ground, the thrust pushed it back up and forward

That's pretty cool. Not all military aircraft need to be sleeping in the desert or chopped up. And the Vigilante was a beautiful aircraft for this purpose.

Yes - there was one on a pole/display outside VX-23 and another at the air museum at Pax River.

Loved the area. One of my favorite bases, although not shite to do in the area. Went to DC and Annapolis a lot. Only decent mall was there - got those warnings not to go to the other due to gang activity.

I know next to nothing about planes but it looks like he may have ejected by mistake?

I still firmly believe carriers need at least 1 if not 2 pure air superiority fighters.

I used to believe the same but a/c are not the primary danger to carrier groups anymore. Long range missiles ( air launched/sub launched and probably hypersonic ) are the primary carrier killers these days. And no air defense/interceptor is going to be able to splash 20 inbound mach 5-6 missiles….CWS guns or not

From my reading the newest Gen 5 jets (SU-57… J 20) are probably more suited to taking the air reconnaisance/air-refueling aspect out of our forces, thus changing our pre-emptive planning scenarios.

Either way the game still remains a chess match…. Move…. Counter-move

Probably not. Indeed, that was a long flight.

Don't know if you knew, at one time there was consideration to build and deploy a COD version of the Viking. It was to replace the S2s. It had my interest but it never got the sign off and with that I left the Navy for the civilian side of aviation.

I beg to differ once the laser mounted defensive arms come online.

Ward Carroll has a good vid on Youtube about this. I knew of the incident, but not what transpired later on. What a story!
Super Sara? Were you guys based at Cecil Field?

This is what I imagine Independence Day would have really been like if they threw a bunch of farmers into fighter jets.

Cecil Field. We had a weather hold on our way to Patrick AFB in Cocoa Beach. Finally got the go and wanted a straight out departure from the taxiway (Helo), but ATC made us line up at the end of the runway. Our PIC to show his displeasure rolled halfway down the runway before lifting off. I'm pretty sure the tower wasn't amused by it either. I was holding my breath that we didn't blow a tire.

I saw the shoot with my own eyes from the flight deck, the phantom floated much longer than I thought it would, I was at Mayport. The tomcat pilot and i were acquaintances in college(he was a Tulane grad)

Amazing story. Did not know the Pilot was a Tulane Grad. That could have had a much worse ending. Glad it didn't.

The USS Starke incident it was a few months before this and I could see how this all transpired. Another pilot from 74 that was an "aggie" was the one that restrained the rio. I remember seeing the air crew get out of the helo and that they were wearing USAF flight suits and thinking "wow that's hard core, even dressing like americans" THEN about 2 hours later it was all over the ship what had happened, ships newspaper NAVY 1 USAF 0.. Just think if an intruder running chopsticks pulled something like that
