Thank God the outside operators "weren't doing their job" (whatever the hell that means). It's not like you walk around the plant for 12 straight hours. If a valve sticks or a seal goes bad or a line ruptures, there's not much you can do other than shut that bitch down in a hurry if it causes a fire.

Would have been some wives who didn't see their husbands come home or children see daddy come home if anybody was walking around aimlessly on the unit.

The fire burned for hours/days. The mushroom cloud didn't last that long.

In an age before cell cameras and everyone owning DSLRs getting instant images were harder to get and keep.

Hydrocrackers man. Worst unit out there next to alkys. We had a fire at a crude unit a few weeks ago. Luckily it was early on a Saturday morning. You never know.
