My Dad wrote flight control software for missiles, rockets (including Apollo-Saturn), and satellites and this is how I remember him trying to explain it to me - lots of math involved.

He could have made it short and sweet like one of my instructors did: It knows where it is because it knows where it isn't. It was all Greek after that.
