A Thursday explosion outside a former bar was an attempt to extort money from a nearby business, but it failed, according to police.

The Alexandria Police Department updated the situation on Friday morning, but did not announce an arrest.

“In response to requests for additional information about the device and the crime that took place, we hope the public understands we cannot provide these details during an active investigation," wrote Chief Jerrod King in the release. "Our duty, in addition to public safety, is to identify the person or persons responsible and not only make an arrest but ensure successful prosecution of those arrested. This is why we ask — not only in this case, but in all major crimes — that people avoid sharing details about the crime in this early stage of the investigation.”

The alleged victim in the attempted extortion told her story in a Facebook post late Thursday.

The investigation into the attempted extortion is continuing. The Cash Cow, a business specializing in title and payday loans, is in the vicinity.

The Alexandria Police Department says there has been a small explosion outside of the old Buds and Suds.

The explosion happened near the MacArthur Drive service road and Hynson Street area.

APD responded at 10:05 a.m. when a barrel or trash can exploded outside of the empty building. No injuries were reported.

Authorities are considering it a criminal investigation. It is believed to be an isolated incident and federal investigators are looking into the incident.
