She was practically a parody of stereotypical revolutionary startup entrepreneur hyping a revolutionary widget that was more theoretical than practical. These companies are designed as acquisition bait or a scam, or sometimes both. There's a bigger fish in the sea that wants to get an early in for a huge stock bump. Why develop it in-house when we can buy intellectual property.

The problem is that Ms Holmes believed her own bullshite and actually thought she could deliver a product largely still in a theoretical stage. The tech to collect lab data from that small amount of blood just isn't there yet.

Edit: Another example was the Nikolai Motor Company who managed to sign a deal with GM to develop a hydrogen powered semi truck. The demo was a complete sham. Even a video to demonstrate a running truck was a sham. They rolled it downhill.
