My dad is a ME; he does machine work and is constantly using math and doing custom work.
He charges $100/per hour. It is def a dying trade-most engineers don't want to do manual labor anymore.

On a side note. I know and knew a couple machinist. Couple of them quit the trade due to the health due to the fact some metals are very toxic when cutting. Shops these days do take care of that by venting. Back in the old days, they didn't.

Op, look up pictures of CNC machinist accidents. Their mistakes can cost them their lives. Been in the business for 13 years as a quality inspector. In that time at least two have died at machine shops in the vicinity of ours.

It's a lot like any other job, if you're one of the best and you get in with a good company, it's a very decent way to make a living. There's a lot of machinists making better money than some guys with MBAs, but it's not a white collar job. It's blue collar all the way. If you are technically minded, mechanically inclined and don't mind working with your hands, go for it. But if you don't have excellent mechanical aptitude, then don't go there. You will end up in some sweat shop making a half-arse wage with no benefits.

You have that right. A lot of ring turners. LADOT is the worst.
But that's good for business.
