Nurse my youngest was in the hospital last week from dehydration(virus), our ped nurse was so bad my wife had to call me to leave work and come have a talk with her.

I think she was tearing up when I finished and they were one step away from calling security.

Consider yourself lucky she didn't go all postal on your arse and that you didn't end up in the ER from the arse-whipping!

Awww, poor thing! She ok now? She must have been really scared there...especially when they had to start an iv.

That's a shame yall had a bad nurse. I've had patients before that will tell me that they don't want a certain nurse back because of issues like that. Only time I've had a family specifically ask to not have me back....was because the mom was legit crazy and she had already "fired" half the nursing staff for the stupidest things. I was busy with another patient of mine(a baby) that was having trouble breathing and the crazy mom got mad at me cause I didn't run in her room right away with an orange juice for her child.

The hospital didn't provide her with the proper safety gear to protect herself from getting exposed. And in the article she said she wasn't even told right away by hospital staff that Mr Duncan was positive for Ebola...something that should have been made known to all staff caring for him as soon as the hospital knew.

This. I hate a litigious society, but the hospital screwed the pooch here.

Plus, they did use her as a PR pawn.

As long as you don't cuss out staff or threaten them...you are ok and security can't really do anything.

Once that head starts bobbing back and forth, I pretty much give up on polite conversation and escalate to Mean Mr Cove.

Aren't you supposed to be shushing down the slopes?

All the training in the world on standard precautions don't mean a thing when a patient is puking everywhere and the hospital has only given you a flimsy gown and gloves and mask to protect yourself.

This. I don't believe people realize how disturbing Ebola is in person. It's not like a stomach bug. It is projectile vomit and explosive diarrhea in addition to blood seeping out through everything.

Damn she was that bad?

Some nurses have no business being nurses sadly. Especially peds or NICU nurses...those should be your nurses that really do love what they do, esp since they are dealing with children and babies.

What was so bad about her if you don't mind giving an example?

Amazing that the nurse is siding with the nurse.

Hi, I'm not a nurse. I've thrown more than one nurse from a hospital room. To say I have disdain for the quality of too many nurses in the hospital system today is an understatement.

But... The hospital screwed up here. Not her.

One of the top docs in infectious diseases out of BR was lecturing the CDC on their idiotic practices. I'll trust his word over some guy on the internet.

Ohhhhhhhh, that explains a lot. NICU nurses HATE floating to peds. And how old is your youngest? They get so focused on taking care of only babies they freak out when they have to care for bigger kids. And to them...anything bigger than 10 lbs is ginormous. We've had that issue lately on our floor. We are super busy and need them to help us out...they either refuse to come or if they do, they will cry all morning because they can't handle their assignment and even when we try to only give them babies...they complain about everything. Yet they make us peds nurses float to the NICU all the time...and while we don't particularly like having to deal with crying babies all shift...we suck it up and do our job.

And that's the difference between a good and bad nurse...

That being said....if she was really out of her element...she should have asked another nurse or the charge nurse for help. It should have never been evident to you or your wife her frustration with being on the peds floor.

I've been sent to the NICU before and given babies I didn't feel comfortable caring for(cause I wasn't familiar with the various pumps/machinery they use on some of the really sick newborns in the NICU). I asked if I could either have a different assignment or if the charge nurse could please quickly educate me on the equipment...or make sure another nurse is willing to help me out during my shift.

Also...a child admitted for dehydration is a pretty easy patient to care for(and likely why assigned to a nurse floating from the NICU). Very basic stuff that shouldn't have overwhelmed her...IVFs, encourage oral intake slowly, maybe some Zofran iv if the child vomits or some Tylenol for a fever and some basic blood tests to check electrolyte levels.
