The Denton Academy of Drag and Burlesque has rebranded to 9Tease Studios to “make it more queer” and foster a safe and encouraging environment for anyone wanting to learn how to perform, said Scarlett Frenzy, owner and director. Drag performance is an exaggerated take on the opposite sex and is tied to the LGBTQ community. Burlesque is satirical comedy that has become associated with striptease.

9Tease Studios has a special going through August where potential students can pay what they can for a class; $10 per hour is the recommended amount listed on the website, Frenzy said. Anyone at any level of performance can attend classes.

Burlesque and queerlesque are two different things and Frenzy wants the academy to highlight that, she said. “Queerlesque is about making a statement and being exactly who you are and sharing that with an audience,” she said. “That is people of color, people of all different sizes and shapes [and] the LGBT community. It is being unapologetically, authentically, fiercely yourself.”
