Jeezuz H Christ. Coming to help with a new born grandchild for 2 days is such a major ask? What's grandma got better to do than be loving on her grand baby, watch Oprah?
Two days every week until the kid is ready for daycare? When she lives over an hour away?
Yeah, that's bonkers, and taking advantage of the grandmother.

You don’t pay attention to history or other cultures much do you?

I personally can not wait to have grandbabies to babysit. But not everyone is a 'baby' person, and grandparents are not to be taken advantage of for free child care.
Also, I was diametrically at odds with my mother in law. She was loud, intrusive, would say impulsive and hurtful things, and try to manipulate our family's decisions. She was also arrogant and felt she knew what was best for everyone because she was always the smartest person in the room. She and my husband were very close when she was alive, and it was always a source of stress. I hated it when he started literally anything with "my mom thinks... or my mom says we should..." Nothing about my relationship with her was 'fixable'. It was something that we both just put up with the best we could.

If the baby is a newborn, then your wife should be with the baby the first few months. If it is for a legit reason, that is different.
Your mom sounds like an a-hole, but did she have other plans?
I wouldn't "hire a sitter" for a newborn. You can go through an agency if you must have a trained person (CPR certified etc) to be with your baby.
