Well according to the ole lady since I didn’t read both books I didn’t really understand both sides of the story, but it was still a great movie.
Make sure you listen to the ending monologue during the credits. It’s pretty cool

Probably a good idea. Steve Currell is the dad and he did a great job. I’d highly recommend reading the books first and I didn’t even read them.
