I have multiple mpg tests and drag strip comparison runs that agree completely with Mythbusters. My claim to fame here is I did all of this long before Mythbusters existed.

the best thing about the vortex that the tailgate creates is it will lift up light objects just enough to make them visible to the car behind you, but rarely ever fly out of the bed. i always keep some beer cans back there to keep people from riding my bumper.

Mythbusters proved it is more efficient to close your tailgate and the most efficient thing you can do for fuel economy is take the tailgate off and put a mesh one up.
