Most of those are pretty accurate...

However, if you compare cities that are similar in size to BR which also aren’t tourist cities (by tourist cities, I mean places like beach towns or ski resorts), BR actually compares pretty favorably.

This is very true, and BR haters tend to miss this point entirely. The two cities I know of that BR is most similar to are Birmingham, AL and Jackson, MS.

“Suburbs that don’t flood” and ~”better roads” kinda miss the point. And in this conversation in its context, when I ask the Baton Rouge haters what’s missing, and your answers are MLB and weather and mountains, then you’re not having the same conversation. I guess Baton Rouge is missing polar bears and Mount Fuji, too.

I’d choose Baton Rouge over both of those and twice on Sunday. It compares favorably to most other non-tourist metros between 700,000 and 1,200,000. You actually do have to make an effort to carve out a social niche for yourself, but it’s not impossible.

If you are unhappy, then leave. My warning would be that sitting around and complaining about your life on the Internet isn’t going to make places like Houston, Memphis, or Atlanta any easier to appreciate either.

Sure, if you’re gonna say that infrastructure needs work, you’re right, but if you say that infrastructure needs work and then in the same list is “better suburbs,” then infrastructure isn’t yours to complain about.

So that eliminates New Orleans, Houston, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Mobile, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Atlanta, etc.

I agree that Louisiana cities have craptastic infrastructure though. They could do better.

As a whole, BR is extremely lacking when it comes to stuff for the “young professional” crowd. It’s good for families and college students, but not for anyone in their 20s-30s out of college and without kids.

I don’t hate BR, just making observations. The city gets too much shite on this site, but it also needs a lot of revamping.

I did travel nursing for about 10 years. It wasn't until I got out and lived in other places that I realized how bad it was here. That said, I have kids in grade school here now, so I'm not going anywhere anytime soon. If nothing is holding you back, spin the globe and put your finger somewhere. Life is short man. You can always move back if it doesn't work out for you.

“Denham Springs sucks” isn’t an answer to the question “What’s missing in Baton Rouge?”

The truth is that the biggest thing missing from Baton Rouge are capable people who live in the suburbs.

BR has better demographics than either of these cities, for now. Birmingham has much nicer suburbs. The BR suburbs don't match up well.

A lot of this has to do with the city being pretty late in desegregating its schools. Living in SBR in the 80s and early 90s was essentially like living in the burbs.

Same here. Birmingham has made some significant strides in recent years. Jackson is pretty much beyond saving. I guess that I'll always look at BR as a city that has a ton of potential that will likely never be reached, largely due to very poor city leadership and a population that seems highly resistant to change.

Huntsville is growing faster than Birmingham and better place to live

Exactly. That's why I didn't compare it to BR.

I think you’re confusing “complaining” with “observing”

Sports, grub, brew, laughs, tunes...plenty of all of these things for a person in Baton Rouge. What's missing?
Nothing, however, when moving to a different place I noticed many things. And it's little things, here and there. A small sample size of things that I've noticed are better, in no particular order:

Festivals, outdoor venues, actual changing of seasons, real pumpkin farms during fall (and an actual fall), arboretums, park districts, museums, better suburbs, restaurants, bars, beer gardens, township fireworks, water parks (at the town pools), schools, sporting events, music scene, traffic, etc.

It's not that Baton Rouge doesn't have those types of things, it's just that many places offer it in a much better way. Add all those little things up and it makes quite a big difference IMO.

I still visit, but every time I go there, I realize how much more happy I am that I left Baton Rouge.

Yeah, you’re observing from afar. “Complaining” is directed to the specific people who live in and around Baton Rouge and spend more time bitching about Baton Rouge than they ever would or could spend efforting to make it a better place.

It’s fun noting the difference between people like you (moved away, level-headed, sees the good of Baton Rouge and how it could be made better) and the negative nancies who blame their circumstances for their being “stuck there” and are “dying to know” about all this great stuff to do in Baton Rouge.

Winners and losers, basically.

I'd slit my wrists in a warm bath if Baton Rouge was my only option for permanent residence.

Luckily, that tail actually liked me and we are still married today
