23 years in Fire/EMS. I have to have the TV on to fall asleep. The years of background noise and stimulus kind of erode your senses. I'm attuned to waking up to certain noises, while I won't even budge during others. The radio traffic, other companies/medics getting calls, them getting back to the station, getting called out in the middle of the night and going to work then going back to the station to get right back in bed..... It fricks with you.

It took my wife a few years to get used to it while we were dating. When we were at her place, no tv. I'd sleep on the couch a lot. At my place, tv on in the bedroom. It wasn't until after we had a baby that she was really okay with it. Our daughter got used to the noise, and my wife got used to the ambient light to check on the baby without having to turn a light on.
