Dior ‘Sauvage’ perfume ad campaign with Johnny Depp sparks outrage on social media

quote:

French luxury giant Dior is facing widespread backlash on social media for a new ad campaign and fragrance it’s promoting called “Sauvage” — which features Johnny Depp as its face and imagery related to the Native American culture, including people dancing to the beat of drums.

quote:

Countless people were accusing the fashion and beauty brand of racism and cultural appropriation on Friday after it rolled out clips for the new campaign — dubbed “We are the Land” — on social media.

“What in the cultural appropriation is this?!” tweeted user @ernestsewell. “@Dior – no. You don’t appropriate native American culture for your stink water, and you don’t use it for a product titled “Wild” in French. Your parfum smells like RACISM.”

quote:

“For this project, the house of Dior also collaborated with Native American consultants from the 50-year old Indigenous advocacy organisation, Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO), to ensure respect for indigenous cultures, values and heritage,” reported Esquire in an article Thursday.

So, even when Native Americans are involved, it's still offensive. Got it.

My least favorite part of 2019:

Event happens

30 people tweet about it all triggered as frick

Hack "news" outlet puts up an article about said 30 tweets acting like it's a widespread opinion.

Hell 30 is generous

Usually it’s like 5 tweets

They say this as if Twitter doesn’t have a hashtag counter built right into their system. The site is basically centered around it

There should be an expectation that anytime a gossip rag talks about Twitter outrage they have to indicate the number of people complaining. Are we talking about hundreds of thousands of culturally sensitive headless hearts or is all of the supposed outrage coming from two dozen dweebs in their parents basements?

Agreed, but I'll add to it.

Some random follower of Company ABC finds it so awful and offensive that he/she/it must share it with the world. The irony.

Literally just went to Bloomingdales an hour ago just to get a spray of this panty dropper to let my wife smell. I’ll be buying it within days.

That’s because they don’t know any better and they need their white saviors to be offended for them... or at least tell them that they should be offended
