I think you are focusing too much on the tactics. The valuable lessons learned by junior leaders pre World Wars were likely harder to quantify. General leadership lessons in managing units, the importance of logistics, and the general traits of being adaptable on the battlefield.

There may also be some interesting lessons in careerism, but not sure if these were positive or negative.
