The research on competitiveness shows a heritability factor ranging from about .40 to .55 or so. This means genetic makeup plays a significant role. But other factors, including the environment or “nurture“ play an equally important, if not larger, role.

As with most behaviors or traits, it’s a complex interaction between genetic, environmental, cultural, biological, psychological and other factors.

I don't know whether this would be nature or nurture, but I think a lot of it depends on where you are in the order of siblings.

That's my set up to say middle children are the tantrum throwers. Sorry for all you chipped shoulders out there.
