And they are uncomfortable. Because that was all that was available and they evolved from just stone benches to pews.
The church chairs they have today that lock together to make a "pew" are superior in comfort, and are also flexible for different configurations and uses.

The little country church I went to growing up got inmates from the nearby prison to do it for them. I doubt the inmates got paid much of anything, but the ladies in the church cooked lunch for them every day. Apparently, there was a list of inmates a mile long trying to get that work.
