Oh it's completely fake. He was a struggling sci-fi writer, aliens were en vogue. He marketed this a "nonfiction" in the fiction section and spent awhile expanding the lore. Religious adventure stuff comes into style like Dan Brown and, boom, demons.

What about the Norsemen? Surely somebody is looking out for us.
I know Reptilians control the gubment yada yada.

They just want our Jane Fosters and occasionally some trucker slob from OK.

I was terrified of aliens as a kid because of a few movies I saw (Fire in the Sky). Kept having nightmares that I was being abducted.
