You shure it was not more of a humming than screech.
Loud rattle-screech, sounds what I think a bad bearing would sound like. Whatever it is, definitly not normal. But when the fan wasn't running, before I pushed the blades, and that took almost zero effort, the compressor was pretty quiet... just a faint hum.

could also be broken fan blades. I've seen that before. Check for cracks near the center hub.

I sort of did that... through the vent louvers, I stuck a thin screwdriver down and pushed on each blade. No unusual movement up or down, turned freely, seemed solid. But I realize that's not like taking the top off and inspecting it.

Op sounds about right but you can do that all yourself for under $75 in parts and 30 mins of work, the repairman will probably charge you $400. I had one charge my wife $250 just for a capacitor change.

sounds to me like you have enough experience to repair it yourself. Where are you located

Sounds like it.
If the fan will spin in the right direction, you are probably ok running it for a while.
I prefer to take parts in to make sure I leave with the right ones. Sometimes the motor shafts change in length or how the fan will fit back on.
Don't accidentally bend your fan blades or you could greatly shorten the life of the new motor.

quote:yes. And for the cost of having an AC tech come out and diagnosing your issue only you can replace the capacitor and fan motor yourself.

Check with Grainger also. There's probably one close to you and likely have the motor and capacitor in stock.

Just had this same exact issue about 2 months ago with mine, ended up being a bad contact. Ended up costing a couple hundred dollars to have the guy to come out and fix and it only took him about 10 minutes

After a quick search on the internet machines, appears it was a contactor, not contact. My bad.
