They bore holes to lay eggs.
Get some cotton balls and WD40. Soak a cotton ball in the oil and use a screwdriver to push the cottonball into one of the holes. The holes are L or T-shaped so try to get the cotton around the corner as far as it’ll go.
When the eggs hatch, the larva start eating through the material their parent packed the egg in with to get out. If you packed the oil-soaked cotton in, they’ll eat that too and it kills them.
I did this years ago and stopped seeing carpenter bees.
