Looking for a midsized suv. Driving a pilot for ten plus years.
Any advise on dealing with car salesmen, what to buy, etc.
Very much appreciated

Advice is spelled with a "c".
When the car salesman starts with his "I've got to talk to my manager" bullshite, say "I'll go with you because obviously you can't make this deal. I'd rather just talk directly with him."
Don't pay for the undercoating, ScotchGuard, window etching or whatever other bullshite they try to sell you as a dealer add on.

As far as a dealership, get some recommendations from friends who’ve had good experiences.
Decide how much you want to spend a month, go to your bank, and they will tell you how much car you can get.
If new car searching, get online and get some dealerships competing against each other.

There is a post from Will Cover about dealing with car salesman that helped me a good while back. Someone may be able to find. Good luck!

You need advice.

Find what you want and start emailing dealerships. Negotiate via email. When you are serious, walk-in ready to buy. Don’t waste your or others time.

I remember buying my first truck
Seriously, I recommend that you secure financing prior to buying. Do not tell sales people until last possible moment. They want that financing money, and they will give you a better deal if they think you will finance through them.

My “advise” is that you learn how to spell advice.

We just bought a Lexus rx350 in Houston, really smooth and easy deal. They came off of sticker quite a bit without too much aggressive haggling. Was in n out in less than 2 hours. Westside Lexus FYI
If the deal isn’t right, be able to walk away and not look back. They specialize in frickery, remember that. Don’t buy any extra warranty this and that. Make sure the finance rate is low and don’t answer the “where do you want your note to be”. That’s none of their business, just have the number in your head and make sure that’s what you purchase it for. Make copies of your drivers license, when they ask for your license, give them a copy that way that won’t hold you hostage with your license. Look at truecar.com, do your research on the vehicles you are interested in and what people are paying for them. Good luck and stay salty

As others have mentioned, do not answer directly when they ask what note can you afford per month. If you do, the next thing you know you'll have a fricking 84 month loan at god knows what interest rate. And it will probably still be a little about what you said you could afford.
I try to settle on a price for the vehicle and then work out the financing.
Don't be too in love with a particular make/model if you can help it. If you are, don't tell them.
As sad and cynical as it sounds, you have to operate under the premise that they are trying to frick you as hard as they can. They may never see you again, so they want to frick you today. Hard.

My advice: find a car you really like, decide what price and terms you can live with, and just buy it.
No matter what you do or what you pay, there’ll always be some hotshot who’ll say you got screwed, or you should’ve tried this negotiating tactic, or you went to the wrong dealer, etc. Just get a deal you’re satisfied with and move on with your life.
