Not sure how old you are but it would be pretty stupid with flow like that and also a quick trip to jail. Heavy police presence all around the spillway

It did happen in 1973 and IIRC several baws met their makers when their small boats capsized due to the rapids.

A couple of baws sought shelter in some trees and were found deceased not due to drowning but succumbed to multiple snake bites.

Kayak in the spillway at your own risk.

Do you have Google Walt? If not you can download the Google app and type Bonne Carre Spillway opening in the search bar.

If you're going to kill yourself, might as well go out with an adventure.

It's also a memory marker.

If you live close enough for it to affect you then you'll always remember these times.

Incredible waste of time to go down there. I do enjoy the short version with the video/news coverage.

I mean, I wouldn’t drive in just to see the spillway open but if your in the area it’s cool to see. Also an excuse to go eat at Truckfarm Tavern in St. Rose which is always great

True fact: There are two former sugar plantation cemeteries located in the spillway which date back to the early 1800s.

Place is solid, the Italian deli on Apple St is solid as well (not the subway shop). Another hidden gem is the buffet in Kenner at the truck stop, great spaghetti and bread pudding
