I understand the difference, but I don't understand why.

I have googled and read a few write-ups but I still don't understand why.

Why not just have everyone ante?

2 different games. One is 5 card stud and the other is Texas hold ‘em.

Because not every hand is worth playing, but you still want to encourage action.

Oh never mind, missed where you said you knew the difference. My bad.

Like the other guy says, it forces action. That's all. Otherwise everyone would just fold a lot more often than you want.

Ante helps keep the game moving.

I don't see how it encourages action. The people with shitty hands are going to fold anyway.

5 card stud everybody gets 5 cards so there is an ante. With hold em you only get 2 cards to start. The ante and blind help the sequence of each game move along accordingly.

In a game like that then you can pick up the blinds by raising. Someone is always going to try to win the money out there. It's free money, right?

Right. I know what you're saying. It's just not exclusive to stud. There are ante hold 'em games. Antes come in in tournaments in later stages, for example. There are also ante cash games.

The big blind ante has become popular, so the big blind puts his full round of antes in at once. Getting everyone’s antes is a pain in the arse.

If you're forced to put in a blind then you are more likely to play a hand you otherwise would have folded.

Same as if you put in an ante, but it's everyone on the table, encouraging even more action....

Well the ante is usually only a fraction of the blind

So is an ante. But it's everyone at the table, not just two frickos.

But the money on the table is the same in either system.

All the big blind has to do with a bunch of "checks" is raise the minimum bet and clear out the suckers.

I really don't see how it encourages betting moreso than the standard ante system.

No, you don't understand the difference then.

There is more money on the table when everyone antes first of all. A considerable bit really.

And you can't check after the big blind. The big blind acts last before the flop. So no one can check. They have to either fold, call, or raise the big blind.

Now if a bunch of people just call the big blind or "limp", then he can raise, sure. But it's not a good idea unless you have a premium hand because you're getting called.
