Dogs have a high tolerance for benadryl.
My 75 lb dog would take something like 3 Xs the human dosage.

What I read said to give them 1 mg per pound... which is definitely much higher than human dosage. Adults are supposed to take two 25 mg tablets.

My dog recently had an allergy to bug bites and scratched so much that a staph infection broke out. May want to get a shampoo that is for skin allergies or take it to the vet to make sure it isnt an allergic response to something.

Benadryl and fish oil on their food. Also can get moisturizing sprays with cortisone in them on amazon. There are shampoos for itchy skin as well.

Yeah, that's what we were trying to avoid... the benadryl plus gold bond topically seemed to really help the itching.
He was looking a lot better this morning, so decided not to take him in yet.
