There was tailgunner who was trapped in the blown off tail section of a B-17. The tail fell slowly due to the control surfaces all being largely intact. He had time to have a smoke and think things over. He still hit hard enough to be briefly knocked out, but a Belgian farmer found him, pried the door open and got him out ahead of the Germans getting there. He also survived the war.

This guy said frick that, I'll just land in the tail section. And the article relates it happened at least one other time.

Imagine how many men fell to their deaths to have enough attempts in order to have multiple survivors.

Holy shite, I heard of another case like this where a tree and snow bank was involved and thought this would be it, but this fricker hit a building and broke his fall with a glass ceiling.
