A real friend shows up at your flooded house to help salvage and gut it without being asked

in my view a friend helps you without asking and never refuses to help you if asked. they stand by you no matter what and would always act in your best interest.
friendship is earned through deeds and actions, not just by hanging around you, those are just acquaintances and not friends because someone you know, is just someone you know, but it doesn't mean anything, and it certainly doesn't mean they consider you a friend or would act in your best interest.
there are people in everyones life who you may think are friends yet they would look the other way when you are in need or would say nothing seeing you wronged, some might even be the ones to do you wrong, stab you in the back, steal from you, betray you, sell you out if they thought it helped them in some way.

If you get bit in the arse by a snake and they're willing to suck the poison out.

I have no real friends, just acquaintances. It sucks but after 40 years I am used to it and don't let it get me down any more.
