My sister was a Navy wife. He was gone 3 months on, 3 months off like clockwork. After he got out, they couldn't stand being around each other 24/7, so he took a job overseas and they're happy again.

Well, your dependapotamus arse doesn't have any rank so frick off
Honestly, anytime I met the wife of an NCO/SNCO/O from my unit they were really nice and the complete opposite.
Of course most of them still blew up and got fat after getting hitched (even with no kids) though.

Speaking of USAA, they've always quoted me higher (much higher in some cases) then Geico or Progressive. And their commercials are worse than the Navy Fed ones so frick 'em.

One of my BIL's junior enlisteds managed to kill himself on a motorcycle. My sister helped with his family when they came into town. She was pretty shook up by it.

I think for alot of men, they would rather serve in the current millitary and do a tour than have two small children at home alone.....
I've done both. When I met my wife she was a civilian and I was active duty. She did the stay at home thing until the kids were in school and then she joined. I deployed twice during this period and she was home with the kids. Years later, I was medically retired, which made me the dependent spouse. She deployed once during this time leaving me back home with the kids.
So... having been on both sides of the fence, I would take deploying over staying home. It's not that it's difficult staying at home, it's just tedious, boring, and drags on forever.
Having said all that, even though we've both been the dependent spouses before, we don't really care for the axiom that "the spouse serves too" and roll our eyes at the USAA commercial. While the spouse is obviously crucial to the family, the army didn't issue our children to us, we chose to have them, knowing full well the sacrifices we might have to make.
Not to mention, their are are plenty of military spouses that don't even have children and spend the whole deployment partying at nightclubs and spending all that extra deployment money as fast as they can.

Who knows. My drill sergeant told us that while we're in the army, "a quarter saves a marriage".
In other words, never come home unexpected.
