Are pest control/inspection scammers a real thing?

I'm normally skeptical of such stories, but we just had a guy ring the doorbell and give his sales pitch. Very shifty customer, was looking all around the house while talking and couldn't even remember my name. Said he wanted to do a 5 minute inspection. I asked him for a business card or website, something where I can do more research. He pushed for a commitment on the inspection, I said not today, he said have a good day and he left.
I've never had a door to door guy not willing to leave something for me to follow up with. He was wearing a shirt with a company name on it but a subsequent search for said company has turned up jack shite locally.
Just a brother trying to make a living or something more nefarious?

I have a pest control company and they come once a month to spray. I see very little of spiders and what not. They even crawl in my attic to spray

The only thing more active in mocking normal jobs than porn would have to be scammers and bullshite artists. If he wasn't reconning your place he could've been planning to measure up the security of one your neighbors from your premises.
Alternatively, you could've just told the guy the house wasn't really yours. Tell'm you stole it. He'd get frustrated and leave.

He was most likely just poorly trained or in a bad mood.

One of two things;
1) It is a scam.
2) He's a sales guy for a pest control company who is hard up for commissions.
You would likely be scammed either way.
BTW, I own a pest control company and have been in the industry for 20 years.
