The dog is a giant schnauzer so I don't think her determination to pass the boundary will override the shock. I guess we won't know till we try it.

No problem. If she's a smart dog she will only get that shock once and after that be fine. And along with being able to adjust their boundaries, you can also adjust how much of a shock they get for trying to cross it. The only maintenance you'll have to worry about is replacing the battery in the collar every few months. And it has a little red light that blinks to tell you when the battery is getting low. Which if your dog is like mine, the battery can actually die and they still won't try to go past where their normal boundary is set.
