He's only 10. I have three great kids and none of them cared about school at that age. Before he starts ninth grade get him to write down a few professions that he sees himself as an adult. Next help him think of goals that he needs to accomplish for those professions. Writing them down and keeping them in a secure place will help him see the goals as reasonable to obtain.
Most importantly tell him how proud you are to be his dad. I think kids need to hear that every once in a while.

I was not caring about school long before social media was a thing.
