I would guess you are taking supplements and maybe started taking them weeks before you actually began to work out?
How’d you know? I guess that was stupid to do.
Not weeks, but did follow recommended direction for creatine a week before. 5mg twice a day for the week before.

Had a hiking buddy develop it after doing a 20 mile hike on a hot summer day in the Smokies. Had reduce urine output, blood in urine, pain. Pretty much injured his kidneys. He had to being rehydrated and allow time for his kidneys to heal up. It's no joke and can lead to renal failure.

I knew because I worked in a medical lab. Seen several 20-30 year olds destroy their kidneys with creatine. Most people can take it for years with no effect, but some simply cannot. The damage is non-reversible. ( In before 50 people scream its perfectly safe to use.)
The before highest creatinine level I've ever seen was around 18 on a dialysis patient. A young man came in ER and I kept getting a 32, way over the linear limit of the instrument. I took so long diluting and reading up the technicals of creatinine that the ER doc walked in and asked what was going on. I told him. He said, "I believe 32 is correct, this patient ate an entire container of creatine." The patient believed since it helped him at first, it must help a lot more if he took more. And no, creatine doesn't interfere with the accuracy of creatinine measurement in the lab.

Recently started working out again after being stagnant for years. Didn’t really ramp up and just jumped into a pretty tough program.
Don’t do this.
Now, get in your Time Machine and make it right.

What would be a better way to “train like an athlete”?
Lots of opinions on this one, but I’ll give you mine…
High intensity/volume. Do a lot in a shorter amount of time. Like you’re in a hurry and need to get a 60min workout done in 40min. Cover a large area, body-wise. Upper/lower is a good split.
I’ll hit upper body, 35 sets of various exercises in about 40-45min. Same for lower body. Little rest, just bang ‘em out. Your body (muscles/lungs) will learn to recover very quickly, which is extremely useful.
NFL players, even the 350lb guys, are tested to see how many times they can rep 225lb on bench. There is very little real life application for a 1-rep max or for long rest periods.
Think power (high weight/low reps) <———————> endurance (low weight/high reps). Neither is super useful, so shoot for strength, which is somewhere in the middle.
For reference, I’m late 40s, can press 225lb 30+ times, press 275lb 20+, 30-40 pullups, and I run 30mi a week.
I’m neither a marathoner nor a powerlifter and can’t compete with either. But I can run either one into the ground in anything that requires a combination of the two.

I don't understand why people train like a bodybuilders instead of athletes. Most peoples objectives align much more athletically than bodybuilding.
Exactly
Train to perform and to be able to perform the day after your workout.
You can still look good and in every case I’ve experienced, you’ll be a hell of a lot stronger than most Bro Bodybuilders.

don't listen to these people...they aren't athletes
MMA, track, basketball, football, etc.
None of these guys are doing "back and bicep" days.
GTFO.
You have no fricking clue wtf you're talking about.
