Took the family out there today and it was worth the 35 min drive.

The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is one of El Paso County’s most unique open spaces. The Paint Mines are named for their colorful clays that were collected by American Indians to make paint. Brightly colored bands, caused by oxidized iron compounds, are found in varying amounts throughout the many different layers of clay.

The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is located in the northeast section of the County near Calhan with approximately 750 acres. The paint mines have evidence of human life as far back as 9,000 years ago. The park features fantastic geological formations including spires and hoodoos that form through erosive action that creates incised gullies and exposed layers of selenite clay and jasper. The park includes a restroom facility, four miles of trails, interpretive signage, and many natural wonders.

Here's a few photos taken with my iPhone.

I saw a random pic once in a book about camping or something like that. It was taken there, but didn't have much of a caption. I had to Google it.

Thanks man. I will admit that I edited these slightly just using my iPhone. The colors were bright but not quite as vibrant as in these photos.

Yes, several times. We lived in Colorado Springs for 10 years. Incredible visits with the kids. They loved that place.

I’ve gone with the kids on field trips a few times, it’s amazing but can be cold af out there. Did you walk far enough to find the caves?

It was pretty cold and windy today.

I was actually talking to someone on reddit about the caves. I didn't know they were there, but now I'm gonna make sure when I go back.

Just went to CO springs a couple weeks ago. We did garden of the gods and the royal gorge bridge, and hung out around manitou springs, but never heard of this. Will have to check it out next time.

If you follow the main channel away from the parking lot, a very developed ravine on your left leads to two caves. The acoustics are great and your imagination runs a little wild thinking of all the animals and people that sought shelter from the wind and worse.

Do any of you have experience with castlewood canyon?

We walked by, but no we didn't pop in to play games or anything. Looked really cool though it was kind of nostalgic with the retro lights.

We stopped by Manitou Brewing for a while & ate at townhouse grill, and checked out the emerald fields dispensary.

It was outdoor seating only so we were trying to find patios with heaters to stay warm. Was a nice little town. Would like to go back without covid regulations
