I hate those things too.
I'm OK with 3-4 pages but having to click 64 times (for example, ____ for every NFL team with a photo then an explanation) is ridiculous.

That is a lot of it. If you ever look at website analytics there is a metric called the bounce rate, which measures the number of site visitors who were on the site but left before ever clicking off the page where they started. Each slide is a new URL, so someone who clicks even one slide has officially not "bounced." Like you mentioned with ad revenue, it also provides a whole new page, which is a whole new set of ads. Since those are sold on impression numbers a 10-page slideshow is literally worth that much more in ad revenue for the person selling it. But I still hate them and will close them every single time.
