Both can be a gamble but it just depends on what you are looking for. I have had both over the years with no issues.

Reputable breeders are fine, it is often hard to know the difference between that and a puppy mill. That being said if new pets were 80% rescue and 20% breeders that would solve much of the overpopulation problem. People should also know there are many breed specific rescues out there. I have a pure bred blue Cane Corso that I got from Cane Corso Rescue out of Austin...when I lived in La. Had her for 6 years now and best dog I have ever had. If you want breed specific look all around the country, many will help facilitate the transport. The Cane Coral Rescue I deal with has dogs all over the country and volunteers make,a,chain from point A to point B to get dogs to new adopters. They have gotten dogs from Florida to Maine and from Pennsylvania to Utah. There are options to get great breed specific dogs from rescues if you do the research.

I’m not gonna judge anyone for wanting a pure bred, particularly working dogs. But I do chuckle a bit at the folks paying thousands for rebranded mutts (e.g. puggles).
My last 4 dogs have been mutts from the pound and from people giving them away and they have all been rock solid and great dogs. Whether you go pure bred or pound puppy, the key is doing the research to find which dogs will be best for you and your family’s lifestyle. People not doing that are how many dogs wind up in the pound in the first place.
