I made one of these to insulate my attic steps which is located above my thermostat.

That's smart, but my attic entrance is in the garage, so there's nothing to be done for it. I caulked around all the ceiling penetrations (e.g. bathroom fans) long ago, installed light can gaskets, and otherwise tried to tighten the house up, but really this all should be addressed during construction with foam, radiant barriers, etc. I've got R13 in the exterior walls and R38 in the attic, and while code, it could be a lot better.

UPDATE:

I bought a Lux brand touch screen programmable thermostat. It was the only unit at Lowes that did not have a 1* swing.

I installed it yesterday afternoon and messed with the damn thing all evening, making little progress.

This morning I changed it to manual mode from programmable since I didnt take into account the factory programmed settings and woke up sweating at 6am in 78 degrees.

I have messed with the swing settings ALL day and I think I have finally figured it out.

Set at 74 degrees with a 1.25* swing =

8:31 - On - 75*

8:50 - Off - 72*

9:06 - On - 75*

9:18 - Off - 72*

That puts me at damn near 2 cycles per hour

I will use that as my guide and set it at 74 while home, 73 at night and 75 while away. If 73 and 75 operate like the 74 has tonight, I should be in good shape.

Depends on the relative humidity. 75 degrees at 50% RH is comfortable if I'm not working out or something.
