Started first grade at a school that was experiencing its first year of integration. There was a news crew there interviewing the white parents asking them how they felt about sending their kids to school with black kids. My mother not wanting to become another Hazel Bryan refused to comment.
I remember crying to mother when I got home that day, and my opinion of that institution did not really change right up to the day they handed me my diploma.
And then the next week I lost my virginity.

July 20 - 1st Moon Landing (watched live)
August 8 & 9 - Manson Family Murders (watched newscasts)
August 14-22 - Hurricane Camille (experienced from the fringe)
August 15-18 - Woodstock (watched news reports)
August 31-Sept 1 - New Orleans (actually Prairieville) Pop Festival

Woodstock 1999 was an embarrassment to music

Tell me you've been to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Hope you avoided the draft.

Manson had that much impact? Really? One of the 4 events in 100 days that shaped our lives? In the same group as Woodstock, Apollo 11 and the internet?
Nope.

My best man at my wedding was an heir to the Gibson's stores. His Grandmother was a West of West Brothers which was right next to most Gibson's. The Gibson here had a peanut vending kiosk right as you walked in. Gibson's was the mercantile and West Brothers clothing. It used to be downtown not far from Nichol's, Gibson went N. Hwy. 171 and Nichol's south. Gibson succumbed to Walmarks, Nichols still hanging in there.

I did see the movie. I went with my neighbor who is 20+ years younger than me and he tried to tell me the story and got it all wrong. I finally had to remind him that I was alive when it happened and he wasn't born yet.
I did manage to avoid the draft. Lottery number (for those who know what I am talking about) was high.

The Youngbloods playing "Get Together" at night is one of my best memories of the event.
Still have the poster

It had everything going for it.
The murders, the cult, the no one was safe nature, The Beatles.
It entered the national zeitgeist and never left.

Bought my first rifle and my first bow at Gibsons. But Gibsons succumbed to K Mart in my part of the world. Then K Mart went down to Walmart.
This was the summer in between my junior and senior year in high school. Maybe the best summer of my life.
