There was one at Charlotte-Douglas in the late 1980s. Commuter plane so the number of passengers was smaller.
After that they had Doppler radar at airports.

My birthday-plane landed a block over from the house I grew up in our former neighbors were on front page of newspaper. Best friend’s sister in law lost her wedding dress because parents house caught on fire. Then had another friend who lost his parents who were on the plane. Was not a fun birthday.
