I was a Red Cross volunteer from MN that flew to Jackson, MS on September 4. Drove to Baton Rouge the next day, only things heading south at that time were National Guard, Red Cross, utility companies, and Wal-Mart semis. HQ'd out of an old Wal-Mart building which looks to be Academy Sports now. Stayed at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic church, assigned to FG Clark for meals/sheltering. I think the highest pop count was only like 5k, the BR convention center was the big dog in town.

Shout out to OLMC, place was amazing and wouldn't have been able to attend the LSU vs Arkansas game without a generous man giving me his ticket, been a fan ever since.

Franks breakfast was the best; I hope the dogs that chased me in a Kenner parking lot got worms, and the hot LSU student I had fling with is happy.

Baton Rouge was one of the best times in my life.

Where did you ride out the actual storm? What was that like?

Building 35, Jackson Barracks. Solid building. It was fine until it flooded.

So, I’ve heard stories, from what I’d generally consider reliable people, about (police/military) snipers in the dome….

No question, but you should be clearer in your OP.

Ive read through this thread and I still can’t put together why you were in the 9th ward to begin with.

I was mobilized on Saturday (Army National Guard). I reported to my unit. On Sunday, I was sent to join the State HQ at Jackson Barracks.

Representative Jefferson asking for a 2-1/2T to get to his house (we didn't have any).

True story - through Nagin, he did commandeer a vehicle, notionally one of mine. They got stuck at his house before we knew anything about it. I dispatched another vehicle to pull them out.

Thank you for sharing your story and thank you for serving the city and helping. I do have one question. Did Lootie make off with all of that beer or did they stop him?

For all I know, he brought it to the dome or convention center. I'm only aware of him because of the meme.

What was the now vacant lot on the corner of Napoleon and St Charles? Cat corner to superior Seafood.

I thought that was a drug store at one time.

It’s nothing but a parking lot now

ETA: You’re right that’s Louisiana and St Charles

Closest I got was around Kiln, MS. I drove down there to take family a bunch of stuff.

My cousin was a first responder and served in all of the desert wars. He was a marine. I asked him what it was like. He said "Ocean Springs is just gone" then he reiterate he had seen somethings in Iraq and Afghanistan, but he would never forget to smell.

I thought you were in JAG? I guess all hands on deck?

The Guard guys were pretty cool, when the media was whining about having military at the shelter, the narrative was they were just there for "visual deterrent" and weren't actually armed. The rifles were just a part of the attire. One late night when I couldn't sleep, I was shooting the shite with some of the guys and asked if that was true, he just smiled and detached his mag. I didn't tell a soul.
