I've known a few people who have worked in prisons. One was a 20 year military vet. Definitely not the "dregs" you describe.

A high school friend of mine escaped from a federal prison in Lompoc, CA in 1980. He said he knew he could do it 'cause he was smarter than the guards, and more committed to escaping than they were to keeping him in.
He lived on the run for almost 2 years before being captured in Washington state.
Being a prison guard must be one of the shittier jobs around.
