Please don't be amazed by the cognitive dissonance in sports. It occurs in all aspects of life. In fact almost every time we make a decision there is at least some cognitive dissonance. We quickly assess the conflicting factors (pros and cons) of a decision (risk-benefit analysis) and make a choice. Eg. I'm hungry, but my back hurts from weeding the garden. Do I get up and fix myself something? Do I ask my wife to fix it? She did - wonderful woman. I have a relative who is an expert at resolving cognitive dissonance; she is an actuary.
