I was Mambo. It was the 2000 season. The guy who worked as Gumbo (Skeet Hanks I believe) told me that people would hate the new mascot. I had a ton of fun in that suit, and the fans were a big reason for that. I'm not sure why you guys hate this mascot; it's for the kids and the kids LOVED Mambo.

Here is a picture of the me at a appearance.

You were Mambo, Chad?

I actually tried out b/c I was an LSU student at the time and we got the email for try-outs from Tiger Paws or whatever.

I did a really good job and got to meet Haslett, but I think I lost because the eventual winner had "mascot experience" at LSU or something.

Ahh well...

The kids liked Mambo and he was based on the Philly Phanatic. It wasn't a horrible idea in theory but since the Saints already had a traditional and time-honored mascot in Gumbo, Mambo never really took off.

I always thought it was funny that Benson and the Saints org. tried to recycle him as a Voodoo mascot - probably because those custom mascot suits are really really expensive (probably a few grand at least once you factor in consultants, etc).

Yes, I was the mascot at Tulane for 3 years. I also did some time in the Scratchmo suit for the Brass (ECHL).

The Philly Phanatic guy (Dave something?) did indeed help design the suit. He spent a few days with me teaching me how to move around and interact with the kids. He was a cool guy, talked a lot about his dad, who coached Div II football, Delaware maybe.

Anyway, it was a sweet job. I got to meet the team and Dennis Miller when he came for MNF. He's a little dude up close. My locker room was right next to the Saintsations. They were really really nice, and that door is always propped open. Wow, this is bringing back lots of memories.
