He knew he was leaving a sinking ship ! A ship he created however ! Unfortunately, the crew he left behind was not capable of raising it ! Gayle Benson is not a competent owner. She married a fortune and now we see Gayle Benson Automotive ? To her credit - she loves New Orleans and hopefully,she can hire some competent people to salvage the Saints !

He left a couple of months after the sucession plan was announced and he wasn't in it while Loomis and Lausha were. He built the brand and they left him out. I would have left too.

Payton tried to leave long before the succession plan. He knew the bottom was gonna fall out and he didn't want to stick around to help with the clean-up. He almost left after 2015 after a second consecutive 7-9 season. There's talk he wanted the Rams job when McVay got it after the 2016 season, which was after the Saints' third consecutive 7-9 season.

I said I the coaching thread teo years ago. If Loomis was serious about winning, they would have hired Harbaugh or someone like him.
They prefer this brother in law barbecue bros bs instead of winning.
