How is it that these teams are able to do it and have high dollar QB's as well?

I believe it all comes down to building through the draft and dumping veterans when their "prime" time is over. Truth be told, the Saints have been awful on draft day even in the Brees/Payton regime.

We sat on what we had going on offense for too long, and we can't draft for crap on defense.

GB and NE almost never bring in high dollar FAs or break the bank to resign guys. They paid their QB and know that's the ticket, so they build around that with draft picks and reasonably priced FAS.

Denver is only doing it recently because they did what we did. They sold out for a win now mentality. In the next year or two they're gonna have to blow it all up because they can't pay everyone.

Defense was supposed to be good this year and Brees did not keep pace with the 3 QB's of the teams you named.
Brees is an all-time great but for whatever reason he was average this year. And when you pay someone that much, things will go bad if he does not perform at a high level

Green Bay has never left Rodgers without a top flight wideout and like Brees used to have, a plethora of good receivers

In NE, they had no receivers last year and while Edelman emerged as a pretty good one, and GRONK was injured...they were pounding it on the ground...and Sean Payton refuses to run the fricking football

They also don't overpay and we overpay everyone. The one guy you could argue giving the monster payday was Nicks and they were content to let him walk. This happened because they dragged their feet on brees. That shite should've been done after 2009...immediately after

Sean Payton is a mediocre coach, and the 3G partnership elevated him. He has actually regressed since his hiatus. He's worse with TOs...suddenly we can't run a no huddle when we try. Payton coaches late in the game like the other team is done scoring so he milks off precious time

He is now Andy Reid 2012

Not to mention SP is the most predictable playcaller in the league and his various personnel packages slow the offense down and tip our hand to opposing defenses

The greatest cap hit Brady will ever have on his team is around $15.0 million.

Aaron Rogers $21 million (in 2019)

Peyton Manning: $21.5 million

Drew Brees: $27.4 million in 2 years. $26.4 million next year.

Whether those contracts for the other 3 are based on restructuring or not there is a stark difference between the salaries (and arguably current talent levels).

It gets even grimmer when you consider the salaries and talent level of each team's top 5 cap hits.

New England has had down years, even with the demigods BB and Brady at the helm. If it wasn't for that division's history of weakness they wouldn't have had so many playoff appearances.

You saw a couple of years there where they made it to the first round of the playoffs and got shut down (like 2009 vs. the Ravens). And they were supposed to be favorites to win it all that year.

Every team in the NFL has bad years, but there are varying levels of badness.

NE and GB especially just plug in young guys and keep going, occasionally resigning some of their better guys.

Now Brees was off this year at times, but only maybe 2-3 QBs do any better with the pass protection we had this season. I mean we made Atlanta look like they have one of the best pass rushing units in the NFL.

Our division winner will be a 7 win team. We are atrocious despite playing in one of the worst divisions ever

The pass protection was never great but there are very few plays where Brees had less than 3 seconds to make a decision. If you are only getting 3 seconds it's called a 3 step drop and/or check downs. 3 seconds does not sound like a lot of time but it's more than enough time to make a decision especially since a lot of QBs (all ?) make pre-snap reads on where the ball might be going.

My contention is that ever since the Super Bowl season, this team has run things with the single-minded focus of KEEPING A___es IN SEATS, not necessarily winning or building a future or sustaining success. Things like the Champions Square overhaul (which if you look around it, it is complete overkill on Super Bowl nostalgia). The statue of Benson holding the Lombardi (what hubris!). Paying Brees and Graham and kicking all these contracts down the road (remember all the people screaming "pay da man!"). Sticking with certain obviously declining players for too long because they are fan favorites (not talking about Brees here). Other than raising the prices on everything in the Dome, they are slow to make changes in general, whether it's the playbook or players or sticking with the familiar gang of assistant coaches. Trading up and giving up picks for shiny objects like Ingram or Cooks. Overpaying Galette ridiculously. Bringing in big splashy expensive free agent moves like Byrd, that are questionable behind the scenes because of his health.

Basically, for a guy who is supposed to be so savvy and SMART, ever since the Super Bowl, Loomis has run the team like he was Message Board Guy, or a drunken caller into WWL from the Buddy D. days. It is catching up with them fast.

Also, it's the holidays and I don't have time to go and actually look it up, but look at how many times an assistant coach has left the Saints lately, and they have simply promoted another coach from within the organization, instead of bringing in someone new and fresh from the outside. It sure seems like there's a "keeping the band together" mentality at work, sometimes.

I am referring to the prolonged performance of the division. If you think about it the NFC-S has produced a wildcard team 3 of the last 5 years (including this year), and I think the Saints have 2 and Falcons 1. Traditionally the NFC-E has been pretty bad. I think they've produced 2 wildcard teams in 5 years, both times the Jets.

Also the Patriots have won their division pretty handily, locking up a home game every year. The NFC-S has been flipped and flopped by 3 teams each year.

GB is a WR factory and their defense generates an insane amount of turnovers and has done so for 5 years now.

Denver's drafted well and has gone after the right guys in FA.

I feel like NE has the benefit of having an elite QB for the offense while having one of the best coaches of all time have a defensive background.

the jets went to 2 straight afc title games in 09 and 10

the year before that, sparano won 11 games with the dolphins and the division

no, their division isn't a world beater, but the pats would win 10 plus games every year in any division.

While this is true, it doesn't change the fact that NE has produced double digit win seasons every year since 2003. 9 of those being 12 wins or better.
