Our safety play this past year was one of the worst in the league. We tried to convert a corner to safety who takes bad angles and played two-hand touch and whiffed on every open field tackle. Dont even want to start on Harper! Can we bring Ed Reed home and draft a SS? Pleeease!

Dear Safety Play this off-season,

You must be better, a lot better.

Thanks,

Not really. The outside linebacker play was probably worse.

apparently Harper and Jenkins were rated last and 2nd to last among all starting safeties. Its a huge issue on our defense.

I think Harper and Jenkins have the ability to raise the level of their play if the level of play around them increases. Corners need to play well and the front 7 of any D can make or break any secondary. But Harper still ain't worth his salary now.

Thank you for registering and bringing a new perspective to the board!

ETA: a pass rush will help all of our DBs

yeah, there hasn't been that much speed at OLB in a long time. It gives the safeties even more ground to cover, no wonder they miss so many tackles.

the thing that kind of bothered me was how Quddus and Rafael Bush could look a lot more comfortable back there when they got their chances as opposed to guys like Harper who makes way too much money. Jenkins has had his moments back there, especially in 2010 but this past year was pretty bad.

edit: Quddus and Bush looked more comfortable in passing situations than the starters is what I meant. the run defense was just flat out shitty no matter who was out there.

I don't think Harper and Jenkins can be decent.

They got passed up by their backups in the same defense.

I always thought this, but then this happened:

So I'm not buying Harper and Jenkins' problems as the lack of talent around them. Harper and Jenkins' problems are Harper and Jenkins.

I just believe they aren't as bad they are made out to be. Our front 7 were pretty bad last year. Any kind of pass rush would be beneficial

Yep, and I'm suppose to sit here and wait for them to turn some corner.

IAQ played with the same front 7 after Jenkins got hurt and was much better. I've posted the link and summary from PFF several times that show that.

I think Spags screwed up this defense terribly last year. We saw Malcom Jenkins play really well at CB and rover his first year and he was ok at FS his second year. Last year he stunk, but it wasn't because of effort or talent. I think Spags just didn't know how to utilize him. I'm not prepared to say we need to get rid of him yet.

As for Harper, we know what we're getting with him. Good in run support, eh in coverage and awful at catching a ball. He is what he is. It could be worse.

IAQ actually played really well. I look forward to seeing him get more PT.

I'd love to get William Moore or Dashon Gholston, but I think the DC being upgraded will actually help the safety play this year if we don't upgrade talent wise.

you know its bad when you have a Bama fan coming on here and taking shots at Harper...

quote:

To easily speak on Eric Smith, he's a white Roman Harper, let that process for a second

The Jets.... should we? Thread

Harper can be good in the box or when he is blitzing but his lack of coverage skills and speed have been dreadful to watch for years now. I know the strong safety isn't always exactly a position that requires elite coverage skills but Harper just flat out made some mental errors in pass coverage and left his teammates out to dry at times. The touchdown pass to Tony Gonzales in the second Falcons game is one I can think of off the top of my head. He was supposed to help Lofton who already had pretty good position but instead just runs up the field to do God knows what and left a window for Matt Ryan to throw the pass.

No question Spags killed this defense. His non-attacking scheme sucked. yes pressure on the quarterback will help. Speed on the edge will help out underneath but the ability for a SS and Lb is vital. We got burned over the top when Jenkins was back there.

No it wasn't. Link?

It was the worst part of our defense after the dline, the linebackers, and the corners

quote:

whiffed on every open field tackle.

Harper and Jenkins both led the nfl during the season at different times, not just safteys, the whole league, in tackles and finished at the top of the league. A testament to how horribly the front 7 played.

Because he is a better than average SS and you don't have anywhere to start?

quote:

We don't have the money for ed Reed and Harper will be great for Ryan to work with in his system

It's no secret I defend Jenkins routinely on this board. And I'll continue to do so. I do think he needs to spend some time playing corner where he belongs. Definitely needs to rotate time with IAQ. He impressed me a few times last year. But he is a good player who is used wrong sometimes. But far from the worst on the team.
