Depends on who's available at 64.

So true.
Thanks for all the hard work stink. Good luck.

Drafted in the second round out of Georgia in 2003, Stinchcomb was around for the low of Hurricane Katrina and the high of the Saints' Super Bowl run.
He was a Pro Bowler in 2009, he was the team's Man of the Year in 2008, he had long served as the player's elected union representative, and he was a "go-to" guy among the local and national media alike.
Quarterback Drew Brees said Stinchcomb is one of his best friends and "one of the greatest teammates I've ever had."
Payton and General Manager Mickey Loomis said he "epitomized" everything they're looking for in their players.

Walter Football 2012 Mock:
61. New Orleans Saints: Ricky Wagner, OT, Wisconsin
The Saints need to bring in someone to challenge Jon Stinchcomb. Stinchcomb, 32 in August, has rapidly regressed each of the past couple of seasons because of knee issues.

more today from nola.com
Stinchcomb's release wasn't motivated by money. His $2.25 million salary this year was reportedly guaranteed, so the Saints didn't save any cash or salary-cap space.
Even still, the Saints decided against keeping him around as a backup.
"We went through a lot of different options," Payton said. "The conclusion we came up with was that we wanted to devote a lot of time to both Zach and Charles."
------------
Yasinskas:
Stinchcomb’s $2.25 million base salary for this year was guaranteed, so the Saints are on the hook for that. Throw in this year’s share of prorated bonuses ($2.425 million) and the Saints are taking a $4.675 million cap hit this year. It could even be a little more. Stinchcomb also was scheduled for a $100,000 workout bonus this offseason. Clayton and I couldn’t come up with a decisive answer on if workout bonus will still count because offseason conditioning wasn’t allowed in the lockout. If they do, tack on another $100,000. That would bring the hit to $4.775 million, which was exactly what Stinchcomb’s cap figure would have been if he stayed with the Saints this season.
He had two more years on his contract and this release is treated like a June 1 cut, meaning some of the cap hit will spill over to next year. In 2012, Stinchcomb still will count $4.85 million toward New Orleans’ salary cap. That's the total of the prorated bonuses that would have been spread out over 2012 and 2013.

This is what confuses the hell out of me, if we still have to pay him for the next two years for the full amount.. why release him? purely for the roster spot? surely he could serve as a good backup for no extra charge..

not if the knee is gone, expect retirement. He's one of the smartest players on the team. I'd guess he has better post-football plans than most- and a life beyond that too.
Saints 2011: bigger, faster, younger

Honestly his knee must be completely effed, I just don't see the reasoning if we are saving zero cap space and zero real money by releasing him.

It is just a tad bit curious that we released both Stinchcomb (team rep) and Heath Evans who made some confrontational tweets against management during the lockout. Both were extremely popular guys on the team. Especially since Stinchcomb's money is guaranteed and he is getting paid regardless of whether he is on the team....just saying.
Don't mind getting younger and better, but surprised to give up the depth at tackle this early in preseason.

No its not. They are not going to release good guys over "controversial tweets". The guys just couldn't cut it.

I don't really think it had anything to do with it. Just a interesting coincidence.

Management had good things to say about both when releasing them and they spoke well of the clubs too. Just NFL reality of getting old and breaking down.

yea just ignore the fact that neither were productive players anymore.
oh and heath wasn't really popular in the lockerroom

I understand this.. if we gained ANYTHING by releasing him, was this purely for the roster spot? since zero moneyz or cap room were gained.

make up your mind!...
Reports that Jon Stinchomb's 2011 salary was guaranteed were not accurate. The New Orleans Saints will save $2.25 million this year after releasing the eight-year veteran on Monday.
Apparently, Stinchcomb's contract originally called for a guaranteed salary this season, but the guarantee was voided after he received a $5.5 million "completion" bonus in 2010.
The Saints will still be charged about $2.5 million against the salary cap this year to account for the pro-rated portion of earlier bonuses paid out to Stinchcomb. And next year, they will be charged the remaining pro-ration amount of around $5 million. But they did save $2.25 million against this year's cap by releasing him.
Still, the move was not made for purely financial reasons. If that was the case, the Saints would have released Stinchomb before the salary cap went into effect on Aug. 4. They gave him the opportunity to keep his starting job at right tackle during the first two weeks of training camp before making the football decision to replace him with backup Zach Strief.
