Yardage alowed is really not a good measure of a defense bc your team's offensive philosphy factors into the equation. If you have a quick strike/passing offense then your oponent will get the ball more which will result in more yds. On the contrary, if your offense is heavy running/time consuming offense then your opponent will have the ball less which will result in less yds.
Saints under Payton will avg give up a lot of yds bc the his offense is not predicated on time of possesion but scoring quickly and usually threw the air (more chances for the clock to stop). Not trying to defend our defense but just giving something to think about.
