Owner doesn’t care enough to fire Loomis

In the late 1990s, Bill Kuharich, with the help of Mike Ditka after Jim Mora quit, had let the Saints get to a similar point where they are now with Mickey Loomis. No hope for the franchise, relying on a mid-tier QB and other young QBs along with aging players and poor drafts. Kuharich had been with the Saints for 14 seasons when Tom Benson finally fired Ditka and Kuharich after a 3-13 season, the team’s seventh consecutive without a playoff berth. Benson hired a true personnel guy Randy Mueller as GM, and the Saints were in the playoffs in his first season. Point is, Benson fired Kuharich despite his years of service because the franchise had rotted significantly. He set aside loyalty to make the right decision.

I have no faith his widow will make the same move with Mickey Loomis, who has never distinguished himself as a personnel guy, which he is not. And that’s why this current situation now feels as hopeless as the late ‘90s. Dennis Allen will probably be fired, as he should be, after the year but as long as Mickey Loomis is still the main football decision-maker, it won’t matter.
