My Pure Unadulterated Opinion

I'm watching the game tonight and I see the leader of our ugly enemy in red, Mike Smith, corral his defense together and light a nice fire under their asses after a personal foul penalty.

For whatever reason it made me realize the value of a coach to a team not from an X's and O's stand point, but from an identity stand point.

There is no doubt in my mind that those players truly value their coaches words as a source of inspiration motivation and attitude at the very least.

SP had his way to light the fire as well, you guys all know it, its the exact same glare you saw plastered in the practice facility with the slogan "Do Your Job".

Thats all our players needed to find a sense of urgency and execute. Thats the team we are, a streamlined perfectly functioning efficient machine. At least with Payton.

With out him that Identity is gone. Whether people want to accept that or not.

So my issue is that all the makeshift coaches

A. are waiting for SP to come back
B. Are waiting to be replaced by the guy that they are replacing
C. And worst of all they are trying to hold this team together by the ideals instilled in them by the guy who is no longer here.

I have never heard of absent leadership being successful.

Yet this is exactly what we are trying to do. The same phrase that encompassed our bounty issue is the same phrase that is our current undoing.

Kill the head and the body will die.

When you have a failing kidney you can only have dialysis for so long until you get a new kidney.

Boys we need a new kidney. A full season on dialysis is not going to win ball games.

These coaches need to be narrowed down to a single coach and that coach needs to create a new identity for this team.

Its either that or we lose an entire season with Drew.

So, for the patient few who read all that, I appreciate your opinion so tell me what you think...

PS heres a reward

we need to do the only logical thing. Make the best of this season while waiting for next year.

Replacing SP would be disasterous, if that is what you are leading up to.

Next year will be here regardless. Next year I want Sean, Drew, Mickey, and Spags in control of our organization. Unless something else comes down real bad that puts next year at risk, you stand pat and weather the storm.

No amount of motivation from a coach is going to teach Roman Harper how to cover a receiver or tackle someone

Mike Smith is a caveman who holds that team back.

100% correct. Suspension of SP was meant to punish the organization and that is exactly what it will do....unfortunately. No team in the NFL would be as successful with there coach playing golf as they otherwise would be with him on the sidelines. The Saints won't be either.

Whoever it may be will be a substitute teacher or placeholder. That is why they are all emphatic about "this is Sean Payton's team". You cannot create a new identity when this is the case.

The history of interim coaches is pretty interesting though. One of the worst ever we know- Rick Venturi. He was bad for the '96 Saints AND '91 Colts with a combined 2-17 record. Some of the best who started as interims are Marty Schottenheimer, Marv Levy, & Don Coryell.

After finally being able to watch both games I'm not as negative as most here.
We have played like garbage and still had a chance to tie game at end. If Defense comes around and at least stop the big plays. And Drew stops all the int's we can win 10 games and maybe a wildcard

I think most of us thought this team would be able to overcome not having Payton

and most of us have been wrong so far. It may get better but kinda doubt it.

You are dead on.
I also think the substitute teacher syndrome is in effect.
I know the players are professionals but as competitive as this league is fires lit under asses are needed from time to time.
