The way Drew steps up into the pocket and the fact he has such a quick release He's gonna make the next LT a probowler just like Bushrod.

So all DE's rush from the outside? What about stunt rushes when the DE crashes in? Can Brown, Smith, or Armstead withstand a bull rush from a player like Demarcus Ware? Say the guards are tied up with blocks and one of those 3 LT's are forced to make that block... There's more to it than just the DE's rushing the outside. "Stepping up" in the pocket won't save a QB from a successful DE rush every play.

That NEVER happens.

There are many things you can do to help out your tackles against proficient pass rushers. You can chip, run screens, delays and traps, quick throws, move the entire pocket etc. That's what imaginative play callers do, and we happen to have one.

What we need is someone to stay healthy that knows the offense and can carry out assignments. The o-line is a unit, and it's more about working as a unit than one on one match ups.

If the Saints had already announced the LT and he was hurt or out for the year I would be a little "scared". As they have not decided who starts yet how is it possible to be worried about the starter?

I've already stated what makes me nervous about this group. Let's hope someone steps up...
I agree, o-line is a unit. Once one person fails they all fail. You're only as good as your weakest player.

our armstead pick. He said it was a multi-season project

That's where I think he's right. Armstead may start, but I think Brown starts with Armstead playing spot duty and us helping him out with TEs/RBs and screens.

AND... In all actuallity, I think he helps our screen game out emensely because he's a better athlete than a guy like Brown. I'd love to see Jason Smith as a tackle eligible with Armstead, and run a screen behind those two with PT or Sproles.

Couldn't agree more here... Didn't he have the fastest 40 for all O-Lineman? It would be great to see a tackle be able to get out to the flats quicker, although I think the setup we had in the past years worked out just fine. He's definitely an intriguing player. Just needs to work hard.

He was as a WR.

The point is that pointing to pro bowl selections as a primary argument in support of a player is stupid. The pro bowl is a glorified popularity contest, not an objective measure of a player's value.

LINK

He was as a KR. He saw 2 passes late in the 4th Q as all the "lesser" talent played. Otherwise, he wouldn't have got any PT. Also, he came in as a reserve, so he wasn't technically voted to the Pro Bowl.

I see your point and agree with it though. It seems every year I'm scratching my head at some of the selections.

Lets see if you guys think that starting LT is important when drew is laying face first in the dirt. You always need a good left tackle to protect a QB's blindside. Thats why they get paid the most out of the whole O-line!

What we are saying is that Bushrod was not a great LT and that at least one of the three guys competing for his spot are at least as good as he is--at a much lower price.

This is how I know you are not a Saints fan.

Jahri Evans at Guard
7 yr/$56,700,000

Ben Grubbs at Guard
5 yr/$36,000,000

Zach Strief at Tackle
3 yr/$5,750,000

Charles Brown at Tackle
4 yr/$3,100,000

If you watched the Saints play or knew anything about their scheme, you would know that the guards are the most important part of our offensive line. We do other things to nutralize DEs. This really isn't even an issue up for debate people!

I could pull up a rookie contract for Charles Brown in make the same point. The fact of the matter is we have no proven talent at left tackle and that is going to cause a problem early on.

You're missing the fact that Pro Bowl selections are meaningless. Johnny Knox has been to the Pro Bowl. Is he a better WR than Colston?
Meaningless because they leave out a bunch of good players but everyone that makes the probowl did have a pretty good year that season. Doesn't mean they had better careers than other players but probably had a better season. So I don't buy that Bushrod was a scrub after making 2 probowls

Never said Bushrod was a scrub.

I said that using pro bowl selections, viewed in a vacuum as you are doing, are a poor measure of player quality.

If anything, you're inflating Bushrod's value. He's a serviceable LT who is not worth what he was asking for. At least one of the three guys on our roster will do the same for cheaper.
